Honda has had a Gold Wing in their extensive model range since 1975 and for many of us, they are bikes that your dad would have longed to own, which makes it hard to understand that the original GL1000 was actually designed to be a sporty offering.
The Wing was perfect for the USA market. With its superior technology that included water-cooling, shaft-drive, and silky-smooth power delivery, it wasn’t long before owners wanted god-awful fairings to keep the wind off on those long stints in the saddle. The GL1000 evolved into the GL1100 for 1980, which came in both a naked or dressed option. By the mid-1990s the Wing had some serious competition from other Japanese manufacturers, so it was time to up the ante!
This 50 shades of beige (and rust) Gold Wing was first registered in 1985; the original owner enjoyed the flat four Wing until 1992 when it was sold to its next custodian. He kept it until July 2018, and with only 16,000 miles recorded he clearly didn’t ride it too much. Judging by the sad-looking chrome he didn’t polish it much either!
