It was a bit noisy on the inside, the Bluetooth connection between my phone and the infotainment was wonky at best and the sound system was appalling. The fuel consumption wasn&rsquo;t as great as I&rsquo;d expected either.On the new model, Renault addressed all these problems, and then some. The cabin is as refined as any midsize SUV and the quality of the sound is magnificent. The fuel consumption is also much better than before. More on that on page 66.The Renault Duster is, in my opinion, the most relevant car on sale in South Africa today. It has the right body style, engine, gearbox, ability and space to suit the needs of a huge chunk of the population. It&rsquo;s the default answer to so many of the car-related enquiries I receive on a weekly basis. Need something cheap? Duster. Need something that&rsquo;ll get a family of four to Durban in comfort? Duster. Need an automatic urban cruiser that won&rsquo;t break the bank at the pumps? Duster.It&rsquo;s so complete that I have only one real criticism: the USB port is situated in an awkward spot. Plug in your phone and the wire dangles awkwardly down over the touch screen and tends to get tangled up over the gear lever.We look forward to the arrival of our long-term 4WD so we can fully explore what this brilliant little car is capable of. For now, it seems pretty close to perfect.
