LATE in July, Chinese automaker BAIC (Beijing Automobile International Corporation) rolled out its first vehicle to be assembled in South Africa, the X25 SUV.

The launch, celebrated at its factory in Coega, Port Elizabeth, took place before hundreds of guests, politicians and business leaders. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Pretoria for a BRICS summit, had the honour of pushing the button to reveal the first vehicle to roll off the factory floor. The first of many hundreds of thousands, if the Chinese automaker is to get its wish.
