Faced with a free day in Portugal, what would you do? Rich Jones hired a CB500 and went for a ride.
We had a free day before a family wedding in Portugal and my wife and I had different aspirations on how to spend it. I wasn’t keen being poolside, reading a book for a day, so it was suggested that I find something to occupy me for a few hours.
A quick check of the internet showed that there were plenty of BMWs to rent in the Lisbon/Cascais area but most were upwards of £170 per day. Now, while I love my K1300S, I’m not sure I was ready to part with this much cash for only a few hours bimbling around the Portuguese countryside.
So I emailed our hotel in Estoril and asked if they had any local recommendations for motorcycle hire and they suggested Scooters na Linha in Cascais. Following a check of the shop’s basic website and exchange of a couple of emails, I identified that they had a motorcycle, as well as plenty of scooters and bicycles, to rent. No money was required in advance, just a final email to confirm before we travelled.
So on the Saturday I found the well-hidden premises in the centre of Cascais and met with Victor. It would cost less than £50 for four hours to hire a nearly new Honda CB500X, including helmet and topbox – and it was his own personal bike. A quick check revealed low mileage, no scuffs and that the tyres, chain and brakes were all good. I threw a leg over and rode away.

Ducati Riding Experience
When I rode the Ducati DesertX to France last year, I did have a bit of an explore on some easy fire roads and gentle green lanes in the wilds of the Médoc area, but was left with the feeling that, had I the experience, the DesertX would have been capable of taking me along some more extreme trails to some even more exciting places. If only there was a way of finding out just how well the Italian adventure bike could cope with some more extreme terrain...

It's ironic that the first all-new MV Agusta model to hit the marketplace right after Italy's No.1 trophy brand was acquired by Austrian giant Pierer Mobility, owner of off-road titans KTM, should be the company's first dual-purpose model of the modern era, powered by MV's all-new 931cc three-cylinder engine that's destined to form the basis of a whole series of new models in coming months and years.
