Love going sideways? So do the guys at BMW. So much so that the Bavarian carmaker had its latest-generation M5 drifted around a skid pad for eight hours. After covering 374.2 km sideways in those eight hours, the new M5 has now entered the Guinness World Record for performing the longest drift by a vehicle for the longest period. The fascinating accomplishment was achieved by BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz who kept on drifting the car around the damp skid pad located at the BMW Performance Centre in South Carolina.Pumping up the ante for the Guinness World Record was the challenge to refuel the M5, not just once but five times, and that too while in motion. Behind the wheel of the other M5 was BMW Performance Center Chief Driving Instructor Matt Mullins who had to maintain a drift beside Schwartz&rsquo;s car. The idea was to maintain a close gap so that the former could be refuelled mid-drift from an additional gasoline tank retro-fitted in the car&rsquo;s trunk.The engineers had fitted the car with a custom dry break fuel system that had the fuel filler relocated to the quarter glass on the rear passenger window. With this modification, the third collaborator, Matt Butts, from Detroit Speed, was able to lean out of the rear passenger window of the M5 driven by Mullins in order to connect the fuel line and hold it onto the filler. With an arrangement similar to how fighter jets refuel mid-air, the record car was supplied with fuel so that it could drift continuously for eight hours.BMW did hold the record for the longest drift in 2013 for 82.6 km which was taken over by a Toyota GT86 in 2013 that covered 144.2 km in 2014. This newest record will take some doing to be beaten, though. Awesome job, BMW!&nbsp;
