De-spite that statement, though, we Indians are strikingly unaware of such schools that would bestow on us the skills we need to efficiently and safely carry out an activity that is close to our hearts &mdash; getting dirty. No, not that. I mean driving cars off-road, into dirt, mud and forests. Thankfully, Mahindra Adventure, launched in 2011 as a separate entity, has been doing just that at its Igatpuri facility in Maharashtra. A sprawling 30 acre property plays host to a myriad of activities, obstacles and training programmes where the best in the business teach you how to tackle terrain you wouldn&rsquo;t be comfortable doing on your own. But Igatpuri is only easily accessible to those living in the west of India, which is why Mahindra Adventure has just inaugurated a new Off-Road Academy in Mangalore.Why Mangalore? Well, I got a chance to speak to Bijoy Kumar, who leads Mahindra Adventures, and he says that Igatpuri was merely the start. The goal has always been to provide accessible training across India. With the huge offroad following that the south enjoys, it was the obvious next location. Their latest facility is spread out over 150 acres of untamed forests and hills, and after spending a day driving around some of its trails, I can assure you it is just as good, if not better, than the Igatpuri facility. It features steep inclines, rocky outcrops, slush pits, ditches, and everything else that makes driving off-road a unique experience. The two courses that you can avail here are the Getting Dirty and the Trail Survivor courses. The former is more of an introduction into, well, getting dirty and is a one-day course, while the latter is a two-day course that gets deeper into more technical driving techniques. In addition to this, with the recent natural calamities that struck the south, the Academy has also introduced a new curriculum with regard to disaster relief and rescue activities, as a 4x4 vehicle can be a potent tool to help in a situation like that.And it doesn&rsquo;t stop with this Academy. The plan, Kumar says, is to have four fully functional academies across the country by 2020, because once you see what cars like the Mahindra Thar are capable of here, you will be encouraged to go further than before. That means one in the east and one in the north. Training like this should be accessible to everyone, and if Mahindra Adventure manages to pull this off, it will shape up to be a great future for enthusiasts. A good time to go back to school, then?
