Call it the need of the hour or a life saviour for the person sitting behind the wheel, several new car buyers are more inclined towards the convenience that one gets with a small automatic car. In this booming market for automatics, which will soon create a segment of its own, Datsun wants to enjoy a slice of the pie. To that effect, the Japanese manufacturer has introduced the redi-GO 1.0-litre variant with an automated manual transmission (or AMT). I spent a day shifting between the accelerator and brake pedal on the streets of Delhi through densely crowded places putting the AMT unit to the test, and here&rsquo;s what I think.There are only two main things that you&rsquo;ll notice once you get in the cabin of the redi-GO AMT. First, there are only two pedals below the dashboard for your right foot and no dead pedal for the left leg, and secondly, the updated audio unit now has the option for Bluetooth connectivity. Now, unlike the Kwid that gets rotary dials on the dashboard for shifting the gears, the redi-GO has a conventional floor-mounted gear shifter. And the best part about it is, there is a manual mode as well, which has been skipped in the Kwid. Turn the ignition key to crank the engine and instead of a digital tachometer, the instrument cluster has a gear position indicator taking its place.Shift the gear stick to &lsquo;D&rsquo;, let go of the brake pedal, and the redi-GO goes on to crawl at a speed of 5-6 kph, which Datsun calls the &lsquo;Rush Hour Mode&rsquo;. This becomes helpful when driving through bumper-to-bumper traffic. The engine puttering under the hood is the same 999cc 3-pot mill that pushes out 67 bhp and 9.27 kgm, which is ideal for a car of its stature and dimensions. The only change under the hood is the AMT &lsquo;box, which I feel is more inclined towards efficiency than eagerness. The signature head-nodding motion of an AMT is present when the gears change but that can be avoided by simply letting go of the throttle momentarily at the time of shifting. Another thing about this AMT is the miscommunication experienced when the accelerator pedal is depressed in expectation of a downshift for acceleration. The gearbox continues to remain in the same gear and only drops when the pedal is almost completely floored. With time, as I was making my way through the crowded streets of Delhi, I did get fairly accustomed to it but preferred to shift to manual whenever there was a need to build speed up or overtake.Being a city runabout, most of the redi-GOs will be present tottering within the city limits, which is an ideal place for a small car. May it be congested roads or narrow lanes or crowded marketplaces, the redi-GO makes it way out through all that without much fuss. While there are no complaints about the engine, the AMT unit can do with a bit of tweaking for some peppiness.In conclusion, the redi-GO 1.0-litre AMT is the simplest and most affordable automatic currently on sale in the market. It undercuts the Alto K10 and the already-competitive Kwid by a good margin, thus making for a good proposition. It is a car for the buyer who is on a tight budget and is on the lookout for an automatic car for intra-city commuting that is easy to maintain and live with. Just what the redi-Go needed? Definitely.&nbsp;
