End for Harrogate line token working

Semaphores remain but, as David Russell reports, a switch to tokenless signalling on the York to Harrogate line should make it more efficient for operations.

End for Harrogate line token working

MANUAL token working on theYork to Harrogate line ended on November 27 following an upgrade to the signalling system, although the semaphore signals in use along much of the route remain in place.

The last passenger service to use the old tokens, between Cattal and Knaresborough (token operation between Poppleton and Hammerton had come to an end the previous weekend), was the 2C75/22.31 YorkHarrogate operated by No. 155345, and the final train of all to use the old system was a westbound Colas engineering train hauled by No. 70813.

The signalling change forms part of a £9.8 million upgrade of the Harrogate line, funded by North Yorkshire County Council and the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership. Other work carried out at the same time has included replacing the centre road at Harrogate and installing a new crossover at the Leeds end of the station.
