Kia Sonet

Compact enough for city commuting and powerful enough for highway cruising the Sonet delivers on all fronts
Sirish Chandran
Kia Sonet

IF THERE’S ONE THING THAT WE have learnt over the past year with the Kia Sonet, it is that diesels are still relevant. Sure the adoption of petrol engines has gone up dramatically, helped by the fact that the market leader will only sell you petrol-powered vehicles, but when you have an oil-burner like the one on this Sonet, delivering both power and a range of over 850km on a tankful, you realise that diesels still make a very strong case for themselves.

Now compact SUVs are, by the very definition of this class, city slickers. The compact proportions make it a breeze to park and manoeuvre in the city while the SUV-like seating position delivers very good visibility making it easier to drive. On the highway though these haven’t been the best, hamstrung by small engines that run out of breath. Not so with the 1.5 diesel Sonet with the automatic gearbox.
