A Sikh man whose voice has evaporated boundaries with his music, the one who has placed an ultrafashionable turban-clad hero in the face of mainstream Indian cinema; he’s an urban lad who believes that he’s every bit of a pendu (a simpleton belonging to pind or village) who sings through his heart.
He’s that boy who literally hoisted the flag of being an outstanding commoner steering our dreams into reality. He’s that child who would recite the greatest of poets, stage after stage in local village functions. Besides all, he’s every bit of that boy for whom his mother stands divine much beyond God himself. He may have been named ‘Daljeet’ at birth, but he has truly lived up to his new forename, conqueror of the hearts – Diljit.
Knowing Daljit
Hailing from a small pind in the Northern province of Punjab, Daljeet Dosanjh knew what self-belief means in life. Today he stands tall realising dreams engrasped in the palm of his hand. Dosanjh was born on January 6, 1984, in a simple Sikh family whose head, Balbir Singh worked with Punjab Roadways and spine, Sukhwinder Kaur took to the deeds of nurturing her family. Like any normal family, Dosanjh grew up sharing the love with his siblings. Once during a tuition session when Dosanjh’s tutor announced that his students could leave early if they could memorise and recite a given text; Dosanjh gave no second thoughts to complete the task. Thus began a series of learning and reciting, whatever came his way. Recognising his talent, Dosanjh was sent to his maternal uncle’s home in Ludhiana by his mother to further his professional upbringing. Little Dosanjh, all of 11, took the parting to his heart and for years did not celebrate his favourite festival of Diwali. For months, he believed that it was his mother’s love for his younger brother that Dosanjh was abandoned. Having been brought up with strong content and principles, one can hear layers of modesty rowing through his melodious voice.
