Gujarat based designer duo Shyamal Shodhan and Bhumika Shodhan (S&B) are a popular choice for every bride-to-be. Their fashion collections strongly reflect their passion for art, craft and heritage. Bhumika’s passion for textiles and fashion led her to study fashion designing at the esteemed National Institute of Fashion Technology, Ahmedabad.
Shyamal studied and researched fashion in Central Saint Martins, London and Italian Design in Milan. Shyamal and Bhumika have also designed bespoke ensembles for stars like Esha Deol, Sonakshi Sinha, Dia Mirza and Hema Malini among others. The designer duo believes in staying true to their roots while keeping pace with what’s happening in the contemporary world of fashion. The couturiers are also involved in the research and revival of various forms of dying arts and crafts. Their designs blend traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities to give a combination that is chic, elegant and simply gorgeous. In an interview with Wedding Affair (WA), the pair talks candidly about their sojourn in the industry, inspirations, social media as a tool in marketing, their latest collections and more.
WA: What defines a Shyamal & Bhumika bride?
S&B: A Shyamal & Bhumika bride is a woman of today. She exudes confidence and is effortlessly elegant. Even with global exposure, she is connected to her heritage and roots. She is traditional but is open to expanding her horizons.
WA: How is working in the fashion industry different today than from when you started out?
S&B: Fashion in India has evolved monumentally. We think the biggest change has been brought about by the use of technology. The fashion industry is booming and as designers we have the freedom to push the envelope each and every time we come up with a new concept. When we started out, fashion was conservative and it was definitely not as big or as exciting as it is today. Designers as well as customers have vastly evolved. Customers are much more aware than they were a decade ago.
WA: How do you want women to feel when wearing your outfits?
