During a recent visit to the United States (US), FarmBiz spoke to James Sumner, president of the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) about challenges and opportunities within the poultry industry. Challenges include the global effects of the trade war between the US and China, as well as African swine fever (ASF) in pig herds.
With a growing demand for poultry meat, opportunities abound as countries grapple with balancing local production and exports. Sumner states that on the supply side, poultry production has always grown faster than red meat production as poultry is the most environmentally friendly and most efficient converter of feed.
Increase in US exports
Even though the majority of US poultry production is consumed domestically with only around 17% exported, the global increase in demand has resulted in an increase in US poultry exports over time.
“Both US chicken production and consumption have increased over the years. Specifically, US chicken production increased at an average annual growth rate of 2,5% from 2014 to 2018, while domestic consumption grew at an average rate of 3,3%,” Sumner highlights.
Top export markets for US poultry products include Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Cuba and Angola, with South Africa only receiving 3% of US poultry exports.
Traditionally, the majority of US broiler exports are dark meat, including chicken leg quarters and other leg meat, such as thighs and drumsticks. However, recent shifts in consumption patterns show that Americans are moving away from breast meat.
South African trade
South Africa’s poultry market is increasingly valuable for poultry-trading countries since the country cannot meet local demand. South Africans consume almost 1,8 million tons of poultry annually, with around 538 000 tons needing to be imported. The US accounts for just under 10% of these imports.
