The first attack was cyber in nature, targeting Ukrainian government offices with a torrent of internet traffic and data-deletion malware. The second wave was direct military incursions over ground, sea, and air.
Russia's military offensive was met with sharp condemnation from the West. The United States, the European Union, and NATO deployed broad, aberrant financial and conciliatory sanctions against Russia to cripple the aggressor's real-time business, trade, and finance.
However, the war has already done its damage to Ukraine's wider tech ecosystem, which includes hundreds of startups, R&D facilities for some of the world's biggest companies, and tech firms, including SaaS.
The last few weeks, we have seen the people of Ukraine, tech leaders and governments taking a 'tech’nical stand against oppression and war. SaaS companies in particular have mobilized resources and technology to reach out and solve problems.
In this issue of SaaS Industry Magazine we bring you the tech world's response to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the state of SaaS in Ukraine, and how tech is being utilized in times of war.
THE BIG TECH'S RESPONSE
The world's leading tech companies - Google (now Alphabet), Apple, Facebook (now Meta), Amazon, Intel, Netflix, Airbnb, Spotify, WeWork, Epic, Roku, Telegram, and Microsoft – have imposed significant and (mainly) volitional sanctions on Russia, in response to its intrusion of Ukraine.
These decisions weren't spontaneous. Facing the largest military attack in Europe since the second world war, Ukraine appealed to the big tech companies as though they were nationally inclined. It's a resounding reminder that tech companies are strong players on the geopolitical arena
Let's see how the tech behemoths responded.
