Nicole Kidman is having some time off. “And I’m loving it!” she beams when we meet in Toronto, where she is promoting her new film, The Goldfinch. It’s no wonder she’s looking so relaxed.

“I finished making my TV series The Undoing in June, I start shooting the movie musical The Prom at the end of the year and I’m not doing anything in between,” she says.

“I was meant to make a film this fall in London and… I just couldn’t do it. So I’m on hiatus until November – we don’t start shooting The Prom till December, but I need time to prepare if I’m going to be dancing – and I’m having the best time.

“There has to be enormous understanding in my family when I’m working, but right now I’m concentrating on doing the things my family needs.”

Between her husband, singer-songwriter Keith Urban, and their daughters – Sunday, 11, and eight-year-old Faith – in Nashville, Tennessee, and her mother Janelle and sister Antonia half the world away in Australia, she has plenty to keep her occupied.

“My mum’s getting older and this summer she was like: ‘I need you back here,’ so I spent July in Australia taking care of her. And my sister has six children who are all extraordinary and so much fun to be around and I got to spend time with them, to go to my niece’s 21st birthday party and do all the things to keep our family tight.
