MEGHAN MANIA HITS CAPE TOWN
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex danced their way into the hearts of South Africans young and old as they began their ten-day tour of southern Africa in Cape Town.
Prince Harry and Meghan were treated to a warm welcome after arriving with baby Archie on a British Airways flight from London and immediately charming the crowds of well-wishers.
Leaving their young son in his nanny’s care, they went to Nyanga township, which belied its reputation as South Africa’s murder capital to greet them with joyful music and dancing.
They were visiting The Justice Desk, an organization working to empower youngsters to defend their human rights and bring about change in their communities.
The royal couple received their first gifts for Archie – a hoodie emblazoned with the words “Be a Voice for Justice” and a framed inscription of a traditional Xhosa name for him: Ntsika, which means “pillar of strength”.
The Duchess, wearing a black-and-white patterned dress by Mayamiko, an ethical brand from Malawi, thrilled onlookers by accepting an invitation to dance from Lilitha Mazana, who said later: “Meghan was a good dancer. She’s very nice and I liked her very much.”
Harry could not help joining in, but the couple also had a serious message to share.
Violence against women in the country was described recently as “a national emergency” by South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In a powerful speech at the Nyanga Arts Centre, Meghan said: “The rights of women and girls is something that is very close to my heart… because I know that when women are empowered, the entire community flourishes.”
