While the focus shifts to the heartland as the electoral heat picks up, Jayant and Charu Chaudhary are busy doing what comes naturally to them – being in the midst of the hoi-polloi and living a slice of their own lives through the people that have voted their family to power over three generations.

Jayant, General Secretary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal party, has been making frequent trips to Western UP, especially Mathura and its neighbouring regions, which has been his erstwhile constituency when he fought and won on a Lok Sabha ticket in 2009. The last general elections in 2014 proved to be his baptism by fire when he lost to popular cine actor Hema Malini, but it also made him a complete politician – who is now at ease with losing as much as he is with winning. When we meet Jayant, he’s in the thick of the battleground, encouraging party men and his on-ground soldiers. The zeal to campaign for his party is inimitable and leaves no room for memory of a lost election. He has clearly moved on. “Ninety-nine per cent of our time in politics is spent in people management – just listening to people. Most people feel left out from the institutional framework of our country and just want to be heard. Someone just goes and listens to them, it is what they actually need. One has to don different hats in politics. I have to act like a philosopher, guide and sometimes a psychiatrist and activist,” he says, decoding the role of a modern politician in simplistic terms.
