Having starred in Home And Away on and off since the age of 19, it’s fair to say Emily Symons knows her character Marilyn Chambers inside out. So it’s been heartbreaking for the actress to watch the bubbly blonde, known for her sweet personality, reach breaking point as her marriage and world crumbles around her, in scenes to be aired in the UK next week.
Emily, who also appeared in Emmerdale from 2001 to 2008, admits Marilyn’s woes are not comfortable for her to play – and she can’t wait for things to turn around for her character.
We called Emily, 51, in Oz to find out what’s in store for Marilyn, how she juggles raising her five-year-old son Henry with the demands of being on Australia’s biggest soap and what her fondest memories are of filming in the Yorkshire Dales…
So Emily, there are tough times ahead for Marilyn, aren’t there?
Yes indeed. It’s been a bit of a rocky road anyway, especially when her husband John has a stroke, so there’s been a long chapter of no joy and not a lot of the old Marilyn. It’s been very sad for her. But she’s in for a life-changing wake-up call.
What does the future hold for her?
