Bradley Cooper remembers telling friends he was choosing A Star Is Born as his directorial debut. ‘I had a lot of people tell me, “Please don’t do this,”’ he recalls. ‘People I respect, and who care about me.’ But despite warnings that the film would flop, Bradley was determined to see his vision come to life. ‘I could not deny what I felt deep down, and that’s why it was this movie. It sort of ignited something in me,’ the 43-year-old actor explains.

In the film, Bradley plays alcoholic rockstar Jackson Maine, who discovers – and falls in love with – talented young singer Ally, who’s played by Lady Gaga. It’s a story of love, pain and courage, with her star rising and his burning out. And the Million Reasons singer says their chemistry is just as strong off screen as it is on. ‘We just had an instant connection,’ she tells. Here, the pair reveal how they became friends for life…

Gaga, this is your first big screen role. Is it something you’ve always dreamed of?

This [has been] an absolute dream. Every single person that is part of this film is just so beautiful, so wonderful and so kind. It made the experience sensational.

You play Ally, a struggling singer who gives up on her dream. Can you relate?
