They say you can’t beat an original. But after countless remakes of the famed Robin Hood tale, the 2018 version starring Taron Egerton as the title character might come close! ‘We’ve tried to make a myth feel like something that resonates with an audience that are so thirsty and hungry for high-octane superhero fare,’ says the 29-year-old Brit. ‘[The storyline’s] dated now, in a lot of ways, but it still has a special place [ for] so many people.’ Like Jamie Dornan, 36, who could be the thieving legend’s biggest fan. But for Jamie Foxx, 50, their film is the only one he cares for! ‘I wasn’t aware of the fact that there were a lot of other Robin Hoods done,’ he admits. What’s different about this incarnation of Robin Hood that sets it apart from, say, Russell Crowe’s 2010 take on the hero?

Well, they sent me a script and it read very much like something that wasn’t set in the 1300s. I liked that about it because it had a kind of irreverence, and a fun and cheeky side. It’s ‘explosive’, it’s kind of high-octane and fast-paced and fun. I think we’ve tried to dispel any of the overly mythic elements of Robin Hood.

You’ve got quite the voice on you. No singing in this one?

I tried to get them to let me cover Bryan Adams, but they didn’t want that for some reason. I still think it’s a mistake. I offered to do a rap version of a song, but they weren’t really feeling it, I don’t know why…

You’ve got some serious star power standing beside you on-screen. What was that like?
