The most crucial period for an abuse victim is when they try to leave their toxic relationship. Because they’re reclaiming their power, the perpetrator will do anything to stop them. In some cases, the victim is battered or worse, dies at their partner’s hands as they try to break free from the circle of violence.
When 19-year-old Dikeledi (Reshoketswe Kekana) recently snuck out of the Khuse house and made amends with her physically and emotionally abusive baby daddy Hammer (Abraham Abe Pupunyane), she was under impression that he’d stop beating her. “She really loves him. Dikeledi is desperately holding onto the idea that he’ll change for the better if she continues dating him,” explains Reshoketswe. But when an argument turns nasty and he loses his temper, Dikeledi realises that he is still the same controlling man. She grabs their son Morena (played by different babies) and she tries to walk out for good. As before, Hammer stands in the doorway and tries to convince her to stay. “Dikeledi has had enough! She wants out this time,” says the actress. Seeing as Hammer is unable to change her mind, he snatches their son and puts him down safely, before returning to beat Dikeledi unconscious. “What follows next is far worse than Dikeledi or Hammer could’ve ever imagined,” warns Reshoketswe.
