After 40 years away from his home, following an abduction when he was just a teen, ealdorman-turned-warrior Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon, Luke in 2011 in anthology horror show American Horror Story, 2011-now) sets out to reclaim his ancestral land in Bebbanburg. It is now known as northern England and as season 4 of this historical fictional drama series The Last Kingdom (2015now) begins, it sits in the hands of Uhtred’s uncle Aelfric (Joseph Millson, Matthew in comedy series Campus, 2011).
At the end of season 3 (2018), King Alfred (David Dawson, Toby in 2011 in psychological drama show Luther, 2010-now) died and this left the nations divided. Soon thereafter, Aelfric is ambushed by the Scots, and he loses most of his army at war. “If there was a time to strike Aelfric, it is now,” says Alexander about Uhtred’s game plan.
