Beyoncé (pop song Single Ladies, 2008) once said something like, “If you like it, put a ring on it”. However, in Mamba (Simo Mogwaza) and Boniswa’s (Lusanda Mbane) case, it’s not a matter of love or even liking each other when it comes to getting hitched. Instead, it’s business – and Boniswa will be smiling all the way to the bank. The two unlikely characters come together in a way that no one could’ve imagined when Mamba asks his political campaign manager Boniswa to marry him. But if you’re expecting a big romantic gesture with Mamba getting down on bended knee, you’ll be sorely disappointed. “Ha! No, this is a case of ‘shall we get married? Okay!’” says Lusanda, laughing.
VOTE FOR LOVE!
So what’s the deal with saying the big “I do”? If it’s not for love, then why bother in the first place? Lusanda says we should banish any idea of romance from our minds and see this as nothing more than a convenient business deal. “Boniswa gets everything she’s been hoping for, which is family, power, money and an empire. For Mamba, having realised that political reputation is everything and most of the female voters don’t like a man who doesn’t have a wife and stable family setup, he feels a marriage of convenience could turn things around for his campaign.” And so the two casually agree to become Joburg’s newest power couple.
