Almost Family
Season 1 Saturdays (from 30 January) M-Net (*101) 20:00
Fertility clinic communications director Julia Bechley (Brittany Snow, Meg in drama series American Dreams, 2002-2005) grew up secretly wishing that she wasn’t an only child. And in a malicious twist of fate, that wish comes true in the single-season dramedy Almost Family (2019-2020). Julia’s father, the pioneering fertility specialist Dr. Leon Bechley (Timothy Hutton, Hugh Crain in horror series The Haunting Of Hill House, 2018), is accused of using his own sperm to inseminate their clinic’s clients rather than the donors that they chose.
But the show is not about how victims of similar crimes felt repelled enough to sue their doctors – like happened in real life. The series has focussed its story on the strangeness of suddenly finding out that you could have 100 siblings out there. In Julia’s case, it’s complicated by the fact that she already knows one of her new half-sisters: her former best friend Edie Palmer (Megalyn Echikunwoke, Megan in comedy series Mind Games, 2014). And it’s only getting stranger.
