Two minutes into her 2012 TEDxSouthBank Women talk entitled “A Bald Woman’s Guide to Survival”, essayist and Single Asian Female playwright Michelle Law concedes, “Baldness in women is a very private thing, which is why I’ve spent my life hiding.” Then, with a sudden motion, she pulls off her wig to make a very public declaration of living with the autoimmunity disorder alopecia areata, daring attendees to question their biases about body image and identity.
