Looking to welcome a pet home? Worried about how Kiddo will adapt and what all you need to do? Here are the essential ground rules.
CHILDREN AND animals share a special bond and it’s not uncommon for kids to demand a pet when they reach a certain age. But a lot of factors have to be considered before you welcome a pet home. The shared responsibilities of the new addition have to be handled in tandem with those of your child. So if you are considering getting a pet, this is everything you need to know to make an informed decision.
working hours
According to Jayashree Ram Mohan, a canine behaviourist from Kolkata, the first thing to consider is the hours the parents spend at work—those who work long hours shouldn’t get a pet. Unlike us, animals are unable to reason logically and have their way of interpreting events. “Pets, especially pups, need constant care, love and support, else they end up being psychologically hurt.”
unanimous decision
It is imperative to consult all family members before getting a pet. Talk to your children and see whether they have any aversion for the pet you are planning to adopt. “Everybody should agree on getting one. Otherwise it becomes extremely difficult for both the pet and the concerned person to adapt to the new environment,” advises Ram Mohan.
