We cosy up with radio personality and proud mother Lin Peifen as she sheds her headphones to give us a behind-the-scenes lowdown on her role as a mummy.
It is not always possible for you to match a voice to its respective face, or a face to its voice. But for Mediacorp YES 933 DJ Lin Peifen, voice and countenance instantly blend into a harmony of familiarity and warmth. Rather than exuding the standoffish persona of household names or the media-weariness of seasoned old timers, she carries herself with an easy charm, translating her on-air approachability and geniality into real time as she greets everyone in the studio with a girly smile and wave.
Having given birth to baby boy Luke last year, the 35-year-old is a newcomer to the world of motherhood. She is constantly tuned in to every sound and movement that he makes even while she is having her makeup done. “What is it, Luke?” she calls out in between aerosol sprays as her little bundle of energy prances around. “He is a loud kid,” says Peifen, amidst a cacophony of playful screams and gurgles. “Sometimes I will bring him out just to drain his energy because he is getting very active now.”
LIFE ON THE AIRWAVES
Radio has always been the NTU communications graduate’s dream occupation, and she got her big break during her second year at Hwa Chong Junior College, when she joined and won a radio DJ contest organised by Mediacorp YES 933. She was offered a part-time contract, and the rest as they say is history. Since her breakthrough, Peifen has not looked back. She’s won the Most Popular YES 933 Radio Personality Award at the MediaCorp Radio Awards in 2013 and made it to the Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste on several occasions.
