Chandigarh is a city and Union Territory of India that serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is ruled by the Union Government which administers all the Union territories of India.

Chandigarh is bordered by Punjab in the north, south and west and Haryana in the east. Chandigarh is situated at the foothills of the Shivalik Mountains, 365 m above sea level. Chandigarh is a small city with only 114 sq.km of land area.

The city gets its name from Chandi, the ‘Goddess of war’ and Garh or ‘home.’ The name is derived from the Chandi Mata Mandir in the city of Panchkula.
