A typical and romantic imagination of an Indian household contains the clunky, ubiquitous TV in the middle of a living room, family members of all ages huddled around it.
A faint humming sound emitting from the set, large knobs that turn with a little effort- if this image seems antiquated, the reason is that it is an image no longer very common in the country. Not only have TV sets become slimmer and more user-friendly, they have also all but broken up with the cable or satellite connection earlier needed to operate them.
Though the journey of the Indian TV universe began with families patiently waiting for that one hour of entertainment a day- and we do all have fond memories of catching episodes of Ramayan and Mahabharat- entire households are now ditching cable TV for a world of internet-delivered content. While some content creators are catering to the younger generation, who have shorter attention spans, are used to having multiple options and are more inclined to viewing their personalized screens, others have been quite successful in making videos and shows that bridge the gap between different age groups. In the last few years, the traditional TV-viewing experience has become increasingly insignificant with most content moving to the internet and new short films and series being available exclusively on the web.
