Maureen McLean visits a seaside location which lifts the spirits whether your interest is history, designer label shopping or simply enjoying The Great Outdoors
SO winter has arrived and you may be feeling the need for a bit of a break without the hassle of airport queues – why not head off to Southsea & Portsmouth for a weekend – no, make it a few days! Whether you are a shopaholic, history buff, ‘foodie’ or an exercise junkie, you’ll find so many things do to whatever the weather at these South coast destinations.
Southsea is a delightful seaside location on the outskirts of Portsmouth. It has a great prom for long brisk walks, or a jog should you feel so inspired. You’ll find the pretty pebble Eastney Beach that includes a special habitat with over 100 varieties of plants. Eastney beach has a lovely welcoming independent seafront café called Coffee Cup.
Whilst we were on our visit, we came across the Marine Conservation Society (www.mcsuk.org) on Eastney beach. They had arranged a beach clean up and were spreading the word about the detrimental impact plastic and rubbish is having on our beautiful coastlines. You can volunteer to take part in their Great British Beach Clean at numerous coastal resorts across the UK.
