Fine wines and fab food… Bonnie May’s exploration of The Garden Route leaves a trail of memories she will treasure for ever
TRAVELLING overseas always comes with the excitement of new food! So, when for the first time we took a trip to South Africa in October, it was wholly centred round embracing the local culture, exploring the Garden Route, and eating and drinking our way round this fabulous country.
Flying into Cape Town was pretty spectacular in itself. After a short cab ride we were settled in the hotel close by to The Wharf area… and oh my, as the sun went down over Table Mountain the setting couldn’t have been more perfect.
Our food journey began with fish, fish and more fish – which was a big tick in the box from our point of view. Then came the wine list, which we had really been looking forward to seeing. In all honesty, I have never been a SA girl when it comes to choosing wine. My preference has always been a little closer to home with France and Italy getting my vote, this solely has been based, I now know, on really not knowing myself what I actually like and don’t like.
After a 24 hour journey, the evening was a little shorter than planned with the big Z’s getting the better of us, which was probably just as well with our packed schedule for the week ahead. It is always a difficult task juggling your time away, getting the balance right between resting and exploring, and then returning home and then needing a holiday to get over it.
