MY 27 year-old-son recently asked me a question I found quite difficult to answer. “Dad”, he said, “what’s a Berni Inn?”

My response seemed to need framing almost as carefully as when, many years before, I’d been required to explain to him where babies came from.

When I stopped to think - about the Berni Inn, not the babies - I was able to summarise. It was, of course, a 1960s and 70s restaurant chain which served a popular but limited menu: by legend prawn cocktail, steak and chips and black forest gateau, often washed down with sweet German wine. It was probably the first dining out experience for many baby boomers.
