Quite A Pickle!

My entire life, there’s always been a dog in my family. When I was born, my parents got a tiny black Manchester terrier to grow up alongside me. When I was outdoors in my carriage getting some sun, the dog would jump into the foot of my carriage and not allow anyone to come near me. Not even my parents! She was a constant companion. We grew up together and even though other dogs came and went in our home, she was my constant companion.

When I was nine years old, our house burned down and our frightened little dog ran from the burning house with us when the fire was discovered. She was as terrified as we were and for the first time in my recollection she took off, running blindly across the road and out of sight. It wasn’t until hours later, with three fire trucks, 33 firemen, many hoses and curious onlookers, that she came running through the crowd, jumping over hoses and between legs to return to the house she had been raised in. She made it through the door of the still smouldering house and was captured by a caring fireman when she curled up in her usual spot near the stove. Her feet were singed and she shook like a leaf but my best friend was back in my arms!

A year later, we discovered my dear companion was pregnant. She was more than ten years old and going to have puppies for the first time in her life. Because of her age, only three of the five puppies she gave birth to survived. One looked a great deal like her, so we decided to keep that puppy after finding good homes for the other two. What a joy to have both of them as we were still recovering from the loss of our home. The pup was only ten weeks old when her mother passed away. Our hearts were broken, but we lavished all our attention on the little girl she left with us to love and cherish.
