Daniel Casey is no stranger to the main stage, with a glittering theatre and television career. Ellie Fells chats to him about his dream role in Abigail’s Party, which begins its UK tour in Brighton.
Abigail’s Party is a modern day classic.
Mike Leigh is a hero of mine, so to have the opportunity to be in one of his plays is just fantastic. I’m playing Laurence who’s married to Beverly, and they’re hosting a party. They’ve got a lady called Sue coming round whose daughter Abigail is having a riotous teenage party up the street. Laurence is pedantic, he’s hot-headed and he’s stressed, but he’s ambitious. It’s a really funny play.
It’s a fairly new kind of role to me, because what’s so fascinating about it is that there’s been a lot of homework to do!
You’ve really got to find out all the secrets of your character to play them properly. We’ll also be doing a lot of improvisations around the situations within the play too, so in that sense you get the opportunity to really delve deep into the characters’ psyche.
