Winging It
Sussex Life|September 2018

Comedian Cariad Lloyd will be returning to Brighton with improvised comedy Austentatious. She speaks to Simone Hellyer about becoming a comedian at the University of Sussex as well as her love of improvisation and podcasts

Simone Hellyer
Winging It

Austentatious is an improvised comedy play in the style of Jane Austen.

So audiences can expect bonnets, dashing gentlemen and secret glances and probably a wedding. The show is completely improvised. There’s no set plot or character structures, which sometimes people find hard to believe, but we genuinely make it up on the spot.

I love improvising. I love the freedom of it and the fear of it.

Genuinely not knowing what is going to happen is a really exciting way to perform. About seven years ago a lot of the cast were at Oxford University together in a group called Oxford Imps. I knew Amy Cooke- Hodgson, so when they came to London we got together and did a show to about ten people. The next month there was about 20 people, then 40 and now we are in the West End and doing our fifth Edinburgh Festival.
