So here it is…Christmas is a time for traditions – some dating back centuries, others perhaps only a year or two, but already an essential part of your family’s particular festive calendar.
We’ve a few joyful traditions here on the Yorkshire Coast that we’d love to share with you this year.
Climb Whitby’s famous 199 steps to reach St Mary’s Parish Church, which will glitter throughout the season (December–January 5) during the annual Christmas Tree Festival. This magical event features around a hundred trees all designed and decorated by local schools, community groups, business and individuals.
Now in its fifth year, the Whitby Krampus Run (December 7) attracts bigger crowds as each year goes by. Inspired by the frankly terrifying half goat/ half demon who, in some parts of Europe, accompanies good St Nick on his rounds to act as bad cop, this costume parade is a logical extension of the town’s claim to fame as Goth capital of the UK.
