So we all should go to sleep right, listening to good ol&rsquo; Bob Marley, thinking about the carefree days of the revolution right? In my honest opinion, if you do that then you are indulging in an act of supreme criminality, with grave consequences for the future prosperity and stability of our country, much graver than speeches at university canteens, proclaiming the ideas of utopia, utopias that we don&rsquo;t and probably will never have. Yes, in theory we do have freedom of press, as interpreted from the stated notion in Article 19, but we also have a slight corrigendum to that, a sort of a sore that clearly states that reasonable restrictions can be imposed in the name of a number of really vague things , like morality public order and others. Now the word to watch out for here, the term that should have bagged all the Oscars if there ever was one for banal miss interpretation, is the one and only &ldquo;reasonable &ldquo; or &ldquo;reasonableness &ldquo; as our courts so often like to elicit out, often at the drop of the smallest hat. And then there are the remnants&rsquo; of the good old &ldquo;British&rdquo; Raj, the quite inocous Press and Telegraph Acts, passed by almost every state worth mentioning in our country. They may look like harmless plants but they do sting and give the executive authorities in our &ldquo;incredible nation&rdquo; lots of authority to hound down and harass media. To get a better feel of the poisons that these great pieces of legislation carry, one needs to look no further than the great states of the South, Tamil Nadu, especially which is quite famous for such things.Coming out from the rather boring world of the laws, and looking at the dusty reality of things, sweaty and angry, untamed by the AC realms of &ldquo;make in India&rdquo;, one would easily notice the rather quick erosion of the values of press freedom, both in mainstream and alternate media, in any language you take. But the nature of things is becoming increasingly diluted, murky at best, nonsense at the least. Rapes won&rsquo;t stop with candlelight marches, corruption won&rsquo;t be checked through 14 days sit-ins, and their &ldquo;live&rdquo; coverage. But press and media, instead of utilizing the transparency and reach of the new tools of communication, have rather turned it into lame chambers, full of useless &ldquo;exclusives&rdquo; and constant &ldquo;breaking news&rdquo; only to be inter-spaced by really bigoted chants of instantaneous justice. All this is leading to a rather alarming downfall in the quality of content, when it comes to press, with more and more of the common masses feeling a rather painful disconnect from it. When that happens, then the ground becomes fertile for intolerant perceptions to breed with scorching intensity, and rise to power, through &ldquo;snake-charming tactics&ldquo; of the highest order, before sounding the ultimate death knell of press freedom. Combine this with the increasing tendencies of media concentration and monopolization within the press space, by entrenched interests and one sees, the onset of a disturbing tendency where media loses its position within the annals of a free liberal society. When that occurs, all hell breaks lose, with the very principles of democracy laid bare, naked to be assaulted with impunity by those who want to. And our nation, has no dearth of such radical elements.Yes, some restrictions on press are a must, and some eye for profit is also good, as it creates sustainable models for our media to flourish in an rather competitive world, but the way press and its freedom is becoming increasingly a topic of harmless comedy, bodes bad tidings for the state of our democracy. Investment is required everywhere, but the role of the press can&rsquo;t be diluted to an extent, when it becomes nothing but a multiple choice commodity, to be purchased for desire. For as I stated before, it is the press that watches over democracy, a plasticine press would lead to a platicine country too, quite weak and breakable, insignificant in the long run in the grander scheme of things.Yes, we don&rsquo;t have a free press right now, it&rsquo;s open maybe but quite flawed, just like our much &ldquo;lauded democracy.&rdquo;
