THIS summer I had the honour of being made a patron for a fabulous charity called Send a Cow. It started life back in 1988 when West Country farmers had more cattle than the new quotas allowed.

Instead of sending their herds to the abattoir they sent them to Africa. While livestock is still part of their work, these days they’re more about teaching good growing techniques to impoverished families, so rather than giving hand-outs they help people to help themselves.
