THE decision to plant a magnolia is easy to make because they’re so beautiful. But narrowing the choice to one is much trickier.

Back when I started gardening, options were limited and unless you had access to a wooded Cornish valley, most of us never ventured beyond shrubbier Magnolia stellata for smaller gardens, M. x soulangiana for their goblet-shaped blooms, and evergreen M. grandiflora for the sheltered walls of stately homes.
