I USED to think a plot of 20ft (6m) wide and 40ft (12m) long qualified as a “small garden” but looking at new housing going up hereabouts, their outside spaces seem to have shrunk to the size of a patio.

Making a shortlist of favourites for these bijou plots must, of necessity, be an exercise in restraint, but there should still be room for trees to provide height, shade and privacy.
