When it comes to grow lights, big isn’t always best, says Toby

A FEW years ago I invested in a massive 1,000-watt sodium-halide lamp and reflector to give overwintered pelargoniums, citrus and herbs a boost in the greenhouse. Flick the switch and instantaneously plants are irradiated with a light akin to the Saharan sun, but I worry that the brightness creates a negative impression of what goes on at Chez Buckland.
