MULCHING the ground in autumn is essential for keeping our garden soil in great shape – helping to lock moisture into the soil, improving its structure, encouraging beneficial soil organisms and creating a layer that prevents weed seeds from germinating.

Rain will wash a lot of the goodness out of soil, but mulches release new nutrients into it as they rot down.
