HAVING BEEN DIAMOND PLATNUMZ’S BACK UP SINGER FOR YEARS, LAVA LAVA IS NOW STEPPING OUT ON HIS OWN AS A SOLO ARTISTE UNDER WASAFI RECORDS.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER THAT YOU COULD SING?
I used to sing in the hood. People noticed and told me to join competitions but I never took the advice seriously. One day I was seated by the roadside singing when an old man who’d passed me came back and asked if I was the one who’d been singing. I said no. He told me that he would never allow his children to pursue music but thought that I should because I sounded good. But things were hard. I went for voice training with a friend but when he took me to a studio no words came out. The managers weren’t helpful either and didn’t want me back. I was persistent, though, and I learned.
HOW DID YOU MEET DIAMOND?
An old friend who’d been Diamond’s dancer called me and said that there was an opening at WasafiRecords. I thought he was joking so I dilly dallied, but he was persistent. I went and met with the heads of WasafiRecords and here I am today.
