Tall ships will sail into the quay, circus performers will wow crowds on the street and an army of bowls players will descend on the seafront – its festival season in Great Yarmouth
THE MAJORITY of traditional seaside holidaymakers may have packed up their buckets and spades and departed Great Yarmouth for the summer – but September marks a fresh surge of visitors to the town, joining residents to celebrate a host of high profile events throughout the month.
It is festival season on the Golden Mile and whether you like a sedate game of bowls, extraordinary international street art or majestic tall ships sailing into the quay, there is something to suit everyone.
Keen to extend the town’s tourism season beyond the summer, Great Yarmouth Borough Council has placed a great emphasis in recent years on developing what the town has to offer away from the beach, donuts, funfairs and amusement arcades.
And it isn’t just the many specialist festivals and events which are key to this, there is a growing focus on the town’s rich maritime heritage, to not only encourage more visitors, but to give local people a sense of pride in the incredible, fascinating history which has shaped the area over the centuries.
