Mumbai-based Fizzah Shah’s farm is a haven for animals, big and small. Nikita Sawant catches up with the animal rights crusader.
How many of us look at stray animals and feel a pang of pity? How many of us actually follow up on that and do something to make their lives better? For animal activist Fizzah Shah, the pain of injured, sick stray dogs was too much to see and ignore. It all started when Shah’s young daughter brought home a frail puppy that otherwise might have had a terrible fate. She says, “My daughter told me about a breeder who had a little pup that he was having trouble selling. He had a bad reputation; one that involved disposing of such dogs. My daughter wanted to bring the dog home, but I was a bit hesitant as we’d never had one before. Finally, I gave in. The first time I ever picked up that puppy, I saw how scared and fragile she was. Unfortunately, she died a few months later, and I was left traumatised.”
