Action master PlatinumGames tries its hand at an RPG
The original Nier was something of a cult hit on console, but never made its way to PC. Automata is a sequel in the same post-apocalyptic world, but a standalone story, so prior knowledge isn’t required. Replacing developer Cavia is the mighty Platinum Games, creator of some of the best action games ever made, including Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising.
A robot army from another world has conquered Earth, forcing the last remnants of humanity to flee to a colony on the Moon. Combat androids called YoRHa are sent back down to the planet to fight the machines, and you play as one of the most powerful: YoRHa No. 2Model B, or 2B for short. From her first battle, it’s clear this is a Platinum game. 2B is beautifully animated, and the flowing, fluid combat looks and feels incredible.
