Fighting back tears in front of 400 rapt fans at the iconic Troubadour rock club in Los Angeles on Feb. 2, Jussie Smollett was defiant. “There are so many words on my heart that I want to say. I’m not fully healed yet, but I’m going to [be],” he said onstage after sharing an emotional embrace with his five siblings: Jurnee, Jazz, Jake, Jocqui and Joel Jr. Making his first public appearance since he was assaulted in Chicago by two men in what appears to have been a racist and homophobic attack just four days earlier, the Empire actor, 36, asked for love in the face of hate. “I’m going to stand strong with y’all. I had to be here tonight,” Smollett told the cheering crowd. “Regardless of what anyone else says, I will only stand for love. I hope that you all stand with me.”
