Cast & Crew Talk ’80’s Style Gore!
The Void follows a police officer who discovers a blood-drenched figure walking down a lonely road. After taking him to a hospital, he uncovers an otherworldly threat that forces him, the patients and the hospital staff to face an indescribable nightmare.
With The Void just out here in the UK for its Digital HD and DVD releases, we caught up with directors Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie; 2 members of the filmmaking team Astron-6 (Manborg, The Editor), known for their ’80’s-esque horror comedies. Joining them was The Void’s producer Casey Walker and star Daniel Fathers who chat about their collaborative effort on one of the year’s most horrifying, icky and unique horror features.
In the interview with SCREAM’s Jessy Williams, the team discuss the Lovecraftian elements of the film, the deeper themes below The Void’s outer monstrosities and the importance of doing more than grossing out your audience by crafting the perfect, terrifying atmosphere. Prepare to enter The Void...
SCREAM: Daniel, what did you think after seeing The Void for the first time at the London Film Festival in 2016?
DANIEL: First of all I was just absolutely relieved that they didn’t fuck it up! I enjoyed it. I’d read the script obviously, but when you read something it’s all in your own imagination. They did really really well, so I’m proud to be part of the movie. I loved it.
SCREAM: How would you describe The Void?
STEVEN: Well, we don’t want to spoil it... Half the fun is going in and expecting something different from what it ultimately ends up being. The bare bones of it is that people are trapped in a hospital and there are some supernatural goings-on. There is a broader and more sadistic plot that is the cause of them all being there.
