TV’s most poisonous political husband and wife are running for office in the thrilling new series of House of Cards
Since Donald Trump was sworn in as US President in January, the daily shocks and surprises emerging from Washington DC have been more jaw-dropping than many a political thriller.
So, with reality currently proving to be far stranger than fiction, will the twists and turns of House of Cards pale in comparison as the fifth series of the drama begins on Netflix this week?
According to Kevin Spacey, who plays ruthless US President Frank Underwood, the best is yet to come.
‘There’s been a lot of commentary about how we can’t compete [with Trump] and that it’s not going to be as interesting and as crazy as the real world,’ says Spacey. ‘My answer to that is, just you wait. It’s one of the most exciting seasons we have done. I haven’t been as excited since the first season.’
According to the 57-year-old star, viewers should expect the unexpected in the new series.
‘One of the most important aspects for me is not to go where people think, and to avoid being predictable,’ he adds. ‘Lots of things are written about what’s going to happen, but people have never been right. It makes me happy that we’ve been able to retain a level of secrecy.’
