It may be famous for its comedy characters like Norris and Mary, but Coronation Street’s laughs are always accompanied by a heavy dose of drama.

Over its 58-year history, the soap has never shied away from sensitive subjects, and this week it’s about to break new ground.

Seventeen years after Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) was at the centre of the soap’s first female rape storyline, the soap will be exploring the issue of male rape. David Platt – who’s already had his fair share of trauma – is on a night out with his ‘pal’ Josh Tucker when the mechanic spikes his drink, takes him back to his flat and sexually assaults him.
