Jennifer Kirby and Helen George on the midwives’ crusade to protect Nonnatus House

Save our home!

The residents of Nonnatus House have been rather unsettled throughout the current run of BBC1’s everpopular Call the Midwife. With the threat of demolition hanging over their beloved home, the nuns and midwives receive more bad news in this week’s finale – the council is cutting their budget and increasing the rent, raising even more doubts about their future. Can they find a way to save Nonnatus?

Fan favourites Jennifer Kirby, 31, and Helen George, 35, who play midwives Val and Trixie, tell TV Times why hope isn’t lost…

What more can you tell us about the finale?

Jennifer: It’s emotional. There are tears, so keep a few tissues handy!

Helen: It’s a great coming together of the Nonnatus community. We are at our best when fighting a cause, and we’re trying to save our home and workplace. It’s a strong finish to a great year.

How are the midwives and nuns feeling about the future?

Jennifer: Not good. It’s scary and things come to a head dramatically. For Val, it’s rough, because her family base has dissipated and Nonnatus has become her home. Everything’s changing and the old East End’s vanishing, and Nonnatus might go with it.
